Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
